James Tetrud is the author of Up North and The Dark Messengers. He grew up in Minnesota, where he began telling tall tales to the neighborhood kids, and has been telling them ever since. He spent his working life as a neurologist in Northern California and now lives in the Bay Area with his wife, Karen, and is hard at work on his next novel.

Up North
In 1959, Matt and two friends drive up north to his aunt and uncle's lodge near the Gunflint Trail, invited by his cousin, who was supposed to have died in Korea nine years earlier. What they find at the lodge is gruesome. By morning, Matt's friends and his aunt and uncle have vanished, and Matt is the only one left to tell a story no one believes. Sixty years later, the lodge has new owners, and their first night on the property nearly kills them. Shaken by what they can't explain, they start digging into the lodge's past and find a decades-old newspaper article naming the only living witness. Tracking Matt down is easy; he never left. What he tells them sends all three on a desperate journey to something older, stranger, and far more dangerous than anything in the lodge
