James has authored and co-authored dozens of scientific papers over five decades in the neurology field, but more recently, he's shifted focus to writing science fiction novels. His novels are inspired by his decades of research and love for the strange and unexplained.

In the winter of 1959, Matt Halvorsen receives a letter from a dead man.

His cousin, presumed killed in Korea, invites him to spend winter break at the family's remote lodge in northern Minnesota. Matt talks two friends into making the drive with him through a blinding blizzard. What they find at the lodge is gruesome. By morning, Matt's friends and his aunt and uncle have vanished, and Matt is the only one left to tell a story no one believes.

Never convicted but never cleared, he spends the next decades confined by court order to a nearby town, a permanent person of interest in a case with no bodies and no answers.

Years later, the lodge changes hands. Its new owner, a computer programmer, and his friend barely survive their first visit, and what they experience there sends them digging into the property's past. The trail leads to a decades-old newspaper account, to Matt himself, and finally to the last known whereabouts of his cousin: the Brooks Range of northern Alaska.

What waits for them beneath those mountains is older, stranger, and far more dangerous than anything in the lodge.
